How NBA Point Spreads Are Made

Super Bowl betting enthusiasts looking to test their luck at a new sport, should look no further then the NBA, as it shares similarities with the NFL. For instance, both sports, use the point spread as their main forte for attracting new and experienced bettors to their games. As a matter of fact, one question we receive a lot at our bookie software offices, from new bettors, is how the point spread differs in the NBA from the NFL. Today we’ll answer that question.

One of the failed viewpoints regarding the point spread is that it is used to show how much better one team is from their opponent. In reality, the point spread is used to create equal money on both teams. For example, if a sportsbook sets the Clippers as a -110 favorite and the Raptors as a +330 dog, they aren’t going to create a profit for themselves, since bettors will wager different amounts. Instead, the point spread is used to put one over on the sharp bettors, as the point spread leaves the possibility that the winning team can still lose. Here is an example.

Raptors

Clippers – 3

Final Score: Raptors 88 Clippers 90

In this example, the Clippers were a favorite to win the game, and they did, however, because the NBA point spread was three and they only won by two, they technically lost. As it relates to sharp bettors, the sharps may have taken the Clippers to win the game by more then three points, but because the Raptors are better then people expected, they were able to keep the game close. For all intents and purposes, the goal of the sportsbook, is to set point spreads in such a way, that it presents the possibility that the sharps may lose.

Will Shorter NBA Season Effect Betting Profits

When the NBA returned from a near five-month lockout, the sports betting world was a buzz, as many sportsbooks and hardcore hoops handicappers akin believed that the shortened season would ultimately effect how much profit was to be made. Many people we included felt that the 66 game season would cheat us out of the profit we could have made with a full 82 game schedule. Instead, with 42 games per team being played on a back to back, the profits for the average bookie software site, may increase dramatically.

For the reason that the NBA schedule for this season is more grueling then ever before, there stands to be a ton of money made by you the average bettor. Essentially, this year more then ever, the effects of a daunting schedule will take a toll on star players bodies. Since basketball is like football, in that one to two players per team dictate how each team will fair, there will be plenty of lines that provide excellent value for the bettor. An example of this is with the Chicago Bulls, who after the first month of the season, are already without reigning MVP and point guard Derrick Rose. Rose sustained an ankle injury, and the lines on Bulls games have been lower than when he has been in the games.

On the other hand, the Miami Heat are also without one of their stars, as Dwayne Wade also has an ankle injury. Nevertheless, the Heat lines are remaining the same at most sportsbooks, because the team also has Chris Bosh and LeBron James on the team. Meaning to say, the loss of Wade isn’t felt as much as the loss of Rose, because there is enough overall franchise talent on the Heat, to allow them to continue to play strong.

Why You Should Avoid NBA Teasers

When it comes to sports betting on basketball, one of the wagers we recommend you stay away from is called the teaser bet. In this wager, the bettor combines the point spread with a parlay. That is to say, the bookie software agent will give you odds that allow you to put the point spread either in favor or against one of the teams you are expecting win within your parlay. In order for your wager to be successful, not only does the NBA team have to win the game, but also they have to cover the number on the point spread. Here is a guide to why teasers are a terrible wager.

In a teaser bet, the sportsbook makes plenty of profit off of casual or inexperienced bettors. Essentially, as we noted above, the teaser allows for the bettor to move the point spread in their favor. However, what we didn’t point out is that you need to include more teams in your wager then what you normally would for a parlay. For example, most people starting out in exotic wagers, will combine two or three teams into one parlay bet, as the odds of three teams winning is more likely then the odds of a person picking 15 of the correct selections.

With that in mind, the teaser is a bad wager, because it asks you to not only put your own personal touch on the point spread, but also include up to 10 or 11 teams in your bet. When it comes to the NBA, we recommend avoiding teasers like the plague, as basketball games have much higher point totals then a football game. Meaning to say, if you have each of your teams winning by four points in a football game, it can happen because of a touchdown. Meanwhile, if you make the same bet in basketball, the difference can be made up or nullified, depending on the amount of baskets the other team scores.

How To Bet An NBA Teaser

In the world of sports betting, wagers get broken down into two categories, straight and exotic. As you can imagine, an exotic wager is one, which provides you with more money then a straight wager, but also more of a risk then a straight wager. Today we’ll examine the exotic wager of a teaser, and how it relates to the NBA.

The NBA and the NFL are the only two sports in the world, which use the point spread. A point spread, is the amount of points a sportsbook believes the favorite will defeat the underdog by. For the NFL, the number ranges from three to 10 points. Conversely, for the NBA, the number can be three, four, five or six. A teaser combines the point spread with a parlay.

A parlay is a bet in which the bettor can risk one set amount on up to 15 teams. In order for the bettor to win their wager, all 15 teams have to win the games they are involved in. the teaser, not only allows you to take 15 teams, but also requires that the point spread you play with is hit by every team in your teaser. When a teaser hits, the bettor can make a ton of money since the odds of every team connecting with the number you assigned for them to win by is very rare. On the other side of things, because the feat is rarely accomplished, this is where the bookie software websites make plenty of money.

In the NBA, in trade for the bettor being allowed to use points in the parlay to create a teaser, they have to take a minimum of two teams. For instance, if a bettor takes the Lakers and the Clippers at four and a half points to win their games, the bettor may take the Clippers at +five and the Lakers at -10.

How To Bet On The NBA

Sports betting handicappers are chomping at the bit, as the NBA is set to return to action on Sunday December 25, with five games to kick off the 2011 – 12 season. This season has had plenty of hype, after one of the longest lockouts in NBA history. On paper, many teams have improved in a short amount of time and should be fun to wager. Here is a guide to wager on the NBA.

Similar to the NFL, the NBA uses several betting genre that can help fans net a profit. The three most common genres are the money line, point spread and totals. For all intents and purposes, we’ll go over the bookie software niches of money line and point spread wagers using the Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors as examples.

The money line is also known as the universal straight wager, and requires the bettor to do two things. Firstly, the bettor must pick the team they believe will win the game outright. Secondly, if the bettor takes the favorite, they have to risk more and receive less, but if they take the underdog, they can risk less and receive more. The reason for this is that the favorite is the team expected to win, while the underdog is expected to lose. Here is how it appears.

Toronto Raptors +150

LA Clippers – 180

In this example, the Toronto Raptors are the underdog, as depicted by the positive integer beside the 150. For that reason, bettors taking the Raptors to win need only risk $100 to receive back $150 since Toronto is going to lose. Conversely, Clippers must wager $180 to get back $100 since they are expecting a win.

On the point spread, the bettor is wagering on how much they believe the favorite will win by or if the underdog will cover. Here is how it appears.

Toronto Raptors

LA Clippers – 3.5

In this examples, the bookies believe that the Clipper will win the game by three and a half points. However, in order for a bettor backing the Clippers to win their wager, they must hope the Clippers win by four points. On the other side of things, Toronto simply has to lose by three points or less to win the bet.

The NBA lockout came to an end early last week, and now the 2011 – 12-season schedule is being released. With training camps set to begin in just over a week, and the season set to start on Christmas Day, fans, college basketball betting should be excited as ever before. Today we’ll be examining why this year’s NBA schedule could be the best of all time.

As a result of the four-month lockout, the NBA was forced to diminish their schedule from 82 to 66 regular season games. For this reason, many teams find themselves in the unfortunate situation of having to play weeks at a time instead of every couple of days. One team that will feel the affects of the schedule early is the Los Angeles Lakers. The best bookie software team of the decade opens the season with three games in a row, before receiving their first break. With this being the case, the Lakers are looking to make a splash in free agency and by trade, so that they can field a young up beat roster this season.

In theory, a 66 game schedule, works better for younger players, as they play about 66 games during a college basketball season. Looking closer at the schedule, there will be 42 back-to-back sequences this season affecting the entire NBA. Some teams will be forced to play more triple games then others. But that is the cost of being one of the more popular teams in the league for the last few years. As this is the case, you can expect the NBA to look similar to the NFL this season in some ways. That is to say, because smaller market teams may not be hit with as daunting a schedule, they will have a better opportunity to make it to the playoffs.

NCAAB Weekend Picks

The college basketball betting season is upon us, and already fans and media alike have plenty to talk about. This weekend is American Thanksgiving, which is always an excellent time to be a sports fan, because of the amazing matchups scheduled. Today we will be looking at a couple of NCAA bookie software games that may force football handicappers to switch the channel.

Syracuse/Virginia Tech v Stanford/Oklahoma State – As of this writing, the semifinal matchups featuring Syracuse v Virginia Tech and Stanford v Oklahoma State for the NIT tournament have yet to be decided. However, by Saturday, the winners of the two semifinals will collide for a chance to be named 2011 NIT Champion. For all intents and purposes, we are going with a Syracuse v Oklahoma State Championship, as both schools have much better basketball programs than Tech and Stanford.

On paper, a Syracuse v Oklahoma State final could be an early preview of a sweet 16 or elite eight matchup between the two squads. Given the way that Kris Joseph and Dion Walters have carried Syracuse the last couple of seasons, NBA fans would be foolish to pick Oklahoma State over Syracuse this coming weekend.

Valparaiso v Ohio St – This game features the five and one Valparaiso taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are ranked third in the nation. Theoretically, this should be the first of many cupcake games for the Buckeyes, who return basically the same roster as the one that narrowly lost to Kentucky in the elite eight portion of the 2011 March Madness tournament.

In saying that, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if Valparaiso shocked the wonder by keeping things close with Ohio State. After all at five and one they have either been beneficiaries of an easy schedule or really are a good team.

November College Hoops Games You Must Tune In For

Comparable to the college football betting season, the college basketball season takes a little bit of time to get rolling, as top teams face cupcake schools basically up until the inter-conference tournaments that kickoff in January and last until March Madness. However, what most NBA fans this season will be quick to discover, is that the first month of the season, does have some exciting games to check out. Here are a few that we recommend.

November 11 – Michigan State Spartans At North Carolina Tar Heels (-9.5) – To kickoff the 2011 – 12 bookie software season, the NCAA spoils its fans with a March Madness caliber matchup. The Spartans will be looking to show their fans and critics alike, that last seasons disappointing results, were a mirage of what the team is all about. In order to prove they can play with the best, State will have to show that playing with North Carolina is no big deal. That is easier said then done though, as UNC possesses one of the scariest starting rotations on the planet. If MSU can keep things close, let the doubt creep in on the Tar Heel bandwagon.

November 15 – Kansas Jayhawks At Kentucky Wildcats (-6.5) – On Tuesday, the Jayhawks and Wildcats renew hostilities this time with a whole new program. The Jayhawks will be without the Morris Twins and Josh Selby, but still have some impressive freshmen. On the contrary, Kentucky will not only have Doron Lamb and Terrence Jones back in the lineup, but also the introductions of Anthony Davis and Marquis Teague. Meaning to say, by all accounts, if Kentucky wants to make a statement early regarding National title hopes, a blowout win over Kansas will do the trick.

NBA Lockout Update

The Breeders Cup betting NBA lockout has caused uproar amongst fans and media alike, as this is the first time since the NHL lockout in the beginning of the decade that a league has been forced to miss time to start the season. No matter how long the NBA season is cut short by the administration and the players union, the only people that will lose are the fans. Today for your bookie software pleasure, we examine how the NBA and its PA should negotiate differently.

NBA owners and administration alike have taken a hardball approach to the strike by the players union. The Owners and administration have cancelled the first two weeks of the regular season, and have threatened to cancel the entire season, should the Union not cooperate. On the contrary, the Union continues to strike, as they claim that the owners are like dictators and refuse to treat them like equals. However, for all the money they claim to be cheating each other out of, the NBA lockout is forcing them to lose even more money.

Essentially, the players union loses $160 million every two weeks that the season is not on. At the same time, the NBA and administration are each losing $800 million with the lockout being on. Meaning to say, both sides really need to work out an agreement here, as not only are the fans losing money, but so to are they.

Earlier today, the NBA and PA loosened their stance on the continued holdout, as they realize the more time they cancel from the season, the more likely the NBA as a whole will go out of business. As a result, today’s meetings between league and union reps couldn’t be more pivotal to the outcome of the lockout.

NBA Lockout Update

The NBA comparable to the NFL finds themselves entrenched in a four month long lockout. Starting on June 30th, the NBA and its players union have been at each others throats for the past four months, in an attempt to work out an agreement that benefits one side but not the other. As a result, similar to the NFL lockout, the only people losing anything in the NBA strike are the bookie software fans. All we want is basketball, but instead we will give you an update on this head-scratching feud.

After cancelling the preseason a couple of weeks ago, the NBA and its board of governors continued to play hard ball with the players union, by cancelling the first two weeks of the regular season schedule. Meant to show that the NBA means business, the cancellation of the first two weeks of the season, suggests to many sports betting enthusiasts across North America, that the NBA could cancel an entire year of play. Comparable to the NHL lockout earlier this decade, it appears as though the NBA is looking to assure that their interests are protected above all else.

Depending on which reports you believe, the NBA and their board of governors, are the good guys in this lockout. Essentially, the NBA is willing to have a 50 / 50 split with the players union in all extra revenue generated by advertising, television sales and merchandise. However, the players want a bigger cut of the pie, as they feel the NBA is cheating them out of revenue.

What’s most interesting to note, is that NBA players are taking to social media in an attempt to win the fans over in there feud with the league. Yet, when a guy like Carmelo Anthony says he feels the fans pain, it is hard to believe, since he is making $23 million.
